As they prepare to play on the court, the Women’s National Basketball Association’s newest expansion team has now been given a logo and a new name.
Golden State Valkyries announced their new name and logo during “Good Morning America,” on May 14, 2018. The name references the warrior women from Norse mythology “who are fearless and unwavering – flying through air and sea alike,” according to WNBA.com. This brand is Golden State’s interpretation of Valkyries in the modern age: bold, strong and fierce.
The Bay Bridge, between San Francisco Bay and Oakland is the basis of the logo. This symbolizes “the presence and connection between Oakland and San Francisco Chase Center where all games will be played by the team.”
The bridge tower — which is also in the shape of a sword — is contained within a V shape, symbolizing the Valkyries name and the “unity of a group of Valkyries in flight. Bridge cables form wings around the tower. The five triangles on each wing represent the number of players that each basketball team can have at any given time.
Team colors include black and Valkyrie Violet, a light shade of purple. Valkyrie Violet is a shade of light purple that symbolizes nobility and power.
“The Golden State Valkyries story begins right now. What better way to take your rightful place as a WNBA team than by being surrounded by Bay Area Legends? “This is Bay Area’s chance to showcase what can be done with the most passionate fans.”
— Valkyries president Jess Smith
Valkyries is an NBA affiliate team of Golden State Warriors. The same group owns the Valkyries. Cartwright’s creative team and Warriors Vice President of Marketing Amanda Chin worked together to develop the WNBA Team brand. After the announcement of the expansion team in October 2023, the process for developing the brand and name began.
Chin stated that communities own their sports teams. “It was therefore only natural that when embarking on the development of the brand identity, we took the time to listen to our fans, and select a nickname that they preferred,” Chin added. Valkyries is the best-received name in social media and surveys. After completing the process of examining and approving the name, our team worked non-stop to develop the supporting elements for the brand that would make both players and fans proud.
Golden State Valkyries are the 13th WNBA team when they first take to the court in 2025. This team already has more than 7,500 season-ticket deposits in place for their inaugural season.
Last week’s reports indicated A 14th team will be announced in Toronto Later this month, the game will begin in 2026.
