The residents of the neighborhood around Times Square are strongly opposed to the idea that the area will become home to a new casino hotel. Tulchin Research has conducted a recent poll that confirms this.
Caesars and SL Green are the two main players in this group. Jay-Z Roc Nation entertainment agency — an highly recognizable consortium, but one that apparently has some grass roots work to do. A poll shows that 71% oppose a casino, with 59% saying “strongly” against it. Only 23% in Times Square support the idea of a gaming facility.
Tulchin noted that this opposition is strong across major demographic groups. Women, for example, are strongly against the government (77%), while voters over 55 years old have a 68% opposition.
The extent to which the men who live in or around Times Square see the concept in a negative way is perhaps telling of the strength of anti-casino feeling. Overall, 65% of men in the area don’t favor a gaming venue in Midtown Manhattan while 63% of males in the 18 to 54 age group — a vital demographic for gaming companies — oppose it.
Times Square Casino opposition cited traffic, crime and other reasons
The reasons why residents do not support the Times Square Casino pitch are easily understood. Eighty one percent of residents believe that a casino will worsen the traffic congestion in an already congested region, while 80 percent think the property is likely to increase crime. The casino is also believed to make Times Square an unattractive place in New York for people to work or live.
This point about criminality is in line with the results of a Situation Group survey. The Situation Group conducted a poll. Released in early 2018The survey didn’t mention the casino proposal, but revealed that wealthy New Yorkers aged 55+ living in suburbs were increasingly reluctant to visit Times Square for Broadway shows because they believed crime was increasing there.
Tulchin polled 65% who thought a casino would harm theaters. Another 64% saw a gaming facility as an obstacle to small business, such as restaurants, in the area.
Caesars and SL Green have been working to alleviate these concerns. The companies said last year that they would be acquiring a number of Times Square businesses Caesars Rewards has been linked. The casino is attempting to direct customers away from the hotel and towards the restaurants and stores in the Theater District.
Times Square Bad Casino Location, Say Voters
Tulchin says that just 9% believe Times Square would be the ideal location for new casinos, while only 12% support gaming establishments being built in any part of New York City. This includes Times Square.
Tulchin polled 24% who said that they were OK with the idea of a casino in New York City, as long as the venue was not located in Times Square. However, 49% did not want any new casinos to be built in the Big Apple.
Caesars and currently, Wynn Resorts The big players are eyeing Manhattan’s gaming venues, while others are looking at the Bronx and Brooklyn.
