According to a recent survey, Texas’s demographic groups are in favor of destination resort casinos, while sports betting is not as popular.
A recent survey sponsored by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation found that destination resort casinos legislation is:
- Voters are divided: 56% support the bill and 30% oppose it.
- Sixty-one percent of men and fifty-two percent of women are in support.
- Blacks (68%), Hispanics (58%), and Whites (54%) support this bill.
Rice University Professor: “Irrespective gender, race, ethnicity, age, religion, partisanship, and education, the absolute majority of Texans in more than 20 subgroups of sociodemographic society want to see resort destination casinos in Texas.” Mark P. JonesA political scientist affiliated with the Foundation told Casino.org.
“There’s also bipartisan support,” he said. The survey found that three-fifths both Democrats (58%) as well as Republicans (57%) are in favor of allowing gaming properties.
The majority of Texans, 52% who identify as “born again Christians”, 59% other Christians and 55% non-religious Texans support the idea of destination resort casino gambling.
Sports Betting
The survey questioned participants about authorizing the construction and operation of destination resort casinos in Texas; legalizing online sports gambling in the state; and authorizing the operation of sportsbooks at stadiums and arenas where pro sports teams play in Texas.
Jones stated that the legislation allowing sports betting inside Texas professional sports venues or online gambling is not as well supported.
According to the survey, 47% of voters likely to vote in Texas support legislation to legalize sports betting online and 37% oppose it. The survey also found that 41% of voters likely to vote support the authorization of sportsbooks in Texas professional sports venues, while 42% oppose it.
Women’s Preferences
In addition, 52% support the destination resort casino law. Only 40% of women support legislation on online sports betting and only 35% are in favor of stadium sportsbooks.
Jones stated that while a majority of Black and Hispanic men and women support online betting on sports and sportsbooks, the support amongst women is significantly lower, particularly white women.
According to a summary of a survey, white women consistently show the lowest level of support for all three forms of gambling proposed, “by large margins” compared with Hispanic women and Hispanic Men, Black women and Black men.
This survey included 1,600 questions about likely Texas voters. The survey was conducted between April 5 to 10.
Texas currently prohibits Class III gambling, which is commercial casino gambling. So too are online sports gambling and in-person sports gambling at sportsbooks.
In 2023, the session of the Texas LegislatureA bill which eventually failed would have allowed for the creation of a constitutional amendment governing the operation and construction of several resort destination casinos. Legislation to permit online sports gambling in Texas narrowly passed in the Texas House, but died in the Texas Senate. The measures would still need to be approved by voters in a referendum if ever passed by the Texas legislature.
