To reduce the risk of head injury, The NFL has announced that players will be allowed to wear Guardian Caps – a 12 ounce soft shell over their helmets – during games.
In 2022 the league required that all offensive and defensive linesmen, linebackers, tight ends, and linebackers wear headgear for preseason practices. Since then, this list has been expanded to include wide receivers, defensive backs, and running backs.
In the two most recent years, data shows a reduction of 50 percent in concussions for players in training wearing Guardian Caps as compared to the 2018/2019 and 2021 averages when protective headgear is not worn.
Players will be permitted wear Guardian Caps for the next season, as we have collected data over two years showing a significant reduction in concussions when players wear them during training. Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President of Player Health and Safety said.
“Additionally, there are new helmets this year that provide as much – if not more – protection than a different helmet model paired with a Guardian Cap. This represents a significant step forward in the effort to make football safer for all players.
Researchers have also found that a Guardian Cap can reduce the force of a head-to-helmet collision by 10 percent. This is the reason why over 300 colleges, and more than 3,000 high school students in the United States use the protective equipment.
The majority of caps are one color. However, some have team logos and stripes in the middle. This was the first cap worn by the Georgia Bulldogs at spring training practice back in March. The NFL is planning to also match caps and helmets in games.
“We’re proud to help improve outcomes for NFL players, and we are thankful to them for investing in their safety,” Erin Hanson is the founder and CEO of Guardian Innovations..
While we’re proud of what we have now and how they perform on the field we plan to continue improving the Guardian Cap in the future to provide better performance and improved aesthetics.
