In a memo released on Wednesday night, the NFL revealed that it had relaxed uniform policies to allow for teams to use a third headgear starting in 2025. However, the NFL offered the option to teams who were redesigning their helmets this offseason.
The Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos may all reveal an additional design of helmet when they unveil their new uniforms in the coming weeks. Previously, it had been expected that each team would keep its two existing shell colors.
After the NFL relaxed the one helmet rule in 2022, thirteen teams began wearing a second protective headgear. They include: the Jets (Texans), Arizona Cardinals (Arizona Cardinals), Atlanta Falcons (Atlanta Falcons), Carolina Panthers(Carolina Panthers), Chicago Bears (“Chicago Bears”), Cincinnati Bengals (“Dallas Cowboys”), New England Patriots “New Orleans Saints”, New York Giants “New York Giants”, Philadelphia Eagles
In 2023 that number will grow to 21, with teams like the Broncos (pictured), Lions (shown), Cleveland Browns (pictured), Minnesota Vikings (pictured), Seattle Seahawks Tennessee Titans Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Indianapolis Colts adding alternate helmets to their closet.
Several teams have already been allowed to switch the facemasks or decals of their second and standard helmets. These include the Bears Chargers Colts Cowboys Giants Jets Lions Saints.
Other teams like the Bengals do not have this option as their stripes are painted directly on the helmets. They could add an orange helmet for a throwback 1968-80 design to their orange and white option.
The Eagles also unveiled an alternate black helmet last year, but scrapped it to go with their throwback Kelly green uniforms. The Eagles will now be allowed to wear the two designs until 2025.
Third helmets are still subject to the same rules as the second ones. This means that they must be worn with a throwback, alternate or Color Rush uniform. The classic designs must also be historically correct if they are worn in conjunction with the third helmets.
By May 1, 2020, teams planning to use a second helmet or a third for 2025 must notify the league. If a team unveils a new helmet for the 2025 season, they would also have done this last May.
