They got them an arena in Athens, Georgia, and it seats about 5,500, so come on and bring … your hockey money?
In Georgia’s six-largest town, a minor league hockey club is named after one of its favorite home-town bands: the B52s.
The ownership group behind the Federal Prospects Hockey League franchise announced on Wednesday, May 15, that the new team would be called the Athens Rock Lobsters — an homage to one of the B-52s’ biggest hits, “Rock Lobster.”
A public vote was held to choose the final name. Both of the final choices had a musical theme: Rock Lobsters or Classic City Panic (a reference to another local group). Widespread Panic.
Rock Lobsters won by 565 votes out of more than 8,000 voters.
Britton Briley is the director of marketing at the Rock Lobsters. She said, “We knew from the start that we wanted to name the restaurant something unique and encapsulated the spirit and energy in Athens.” “The community’s response was amazing. The name ‘Rock Lobsters’ struck a chord with our fans, blending music, creativity, and a touch of humor. “It’s the ideal identity for our team of hockey players.”
B-52s endorsed the Rock Lobsters name and encouraged their fans to cast votes on social media. According to the statement released by the band, they were delighted with the result:
“Athens, Georgia, is our birthplace and where we started our journey ‘down the Atlanta Highway’ to spread our homegrown groove out to the universe. ‘Rock Lobster’ was one of our very first songs and we can testify that millions in the galaxy have gone wild to this deep sea surf anthem. We are truly honored to have our hometown hockey team named the Rock Lobsters. As the song declares ‘Let’s rock!'”

Scott Hull is the executive vice-president of the Rock Lobsters. “Athens has a very rich culture, and we will continue that tradition with the Rock Lobsters,” he said. It’s not only about building a hockey club, it’s also about building a whole community. “The support of local musicians, artists and fans is overwhelming. We can’t believe we will be on the ice this October.”
According to the announcement made on Wednesday, “the rest of Rock Lobsters visual identity is soon to be revealed.”[The] The team has developed a design concept that features a lobster holding a guitar, which cleverly converts to a hockeystick. This represents the blend of sports and music that makes up the team. A vibrant, red color palette will be used in the design to add playful elements and energy. This is intended to capture Athens’ exciting music history and spirit.
