Who’s on the rise? What’s the situation? After Matchday 7, we’ve ranked the 29 clubs of the Premier League. We’ll dive right in.
Previous ranking: 1
Andres Reyes’s reckless foul reduced New York from 10 to 9 men in the 42nd minutes. Dante Vanzier was replaced by another defender, the league’s leading assister. Even though they had only 23% of possession in the second-half, they created more chances and drew 0-0 with Chicago.
Previous ranking: 2
It goes to Atlanta and plays in front 42k+ of fans. They fall behind 2-0 but manage to salvage a point. Philly still remains the only team unbeaten in MLS thanks to two goals scored in the 73rd minute and 77rd minute.
Previous ranking: 3
Vancouver lost their second match of the season to the highest-ranked team in the western region. Vancouver lost 3-1 at home to the LA Galaxy thanks to late goals by Californians, and their failure to complete their chances. They’ll now test themselves with some interesting road matches (Seattle Red Bulls).
Previous ranking: 4
The Crew held RSL to an 0 – 0 draw in Utah after a historic victory in Mexico the previous week. The Crew’s performance was not their best of the season, but a draw on the road with a good team in Week 9 is a solid result.
Previous ranking: 6
LAFC and Portland tied in Portland 2-2, with Portland down to just 10 players. Tim Tillman saw his late match-winning goal called off during a test in which LA was looking more threatening towards the end.
Previous ranking: 7
Miami reclaimed the top spot in Supporters’ Shield after a midweek loss to Monterrey at Concacaf Champions Cup. In front of 72,610 Arrowhead Stadium supporters, Miami returned to league action following its defeat to Monterrey. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez all scored memorable goals in Herons’ first victory since March 16 and put on elite performances.
Lionel Messi scores stunning goal from distance against Inter Miami
Lionel Messi slams home a fantastic goal from more than 25 yards for Inter Miami.
Previous ranking: 8
RSL will regret that they didn’t make the most of their eight attempts on goal, especially with a home-field advantage and against a Crew side who was changing its roster. A 0-0 draw against the reigning champions is not a reason for concern.
Previous ranking: 9
Galaxy recovers from their El Trafico Vancouver is the West’s number two team. They took points away from LAFC. The Whitecaps scored on their set pieces after they had taken the early lead. This was the seventh time this season that the Whitecaps have conceded a goal from one of these set pieces. However, the Whitecaps recovered and added two more goals to the score before the game ended. They are a constant threat: Only Miami scored more this year. They need to improve their set-piece defending.
Previous ranking: 10
Atlanta, still without Giorgos Giaokoumakis as a forward, let slip a 2-0 lead for only the fifth time ever in club history. Union may be a pesky visitor, but hosts regret letting the game end at 2-2. Union’s second goal was also the result of a glaring mistake.
Previous ranking: 5
The Supporters Shield champions of last year suffered their second defeat in a row, their second consecutive match played without Roman Celentano as goalkeeper. Alec Kann made a few stops in his place, but it wasn’t enough to stop Josef Martinez scoring his 107th MLS goal and securing Montreal the victory.
Previous ranking: 12
Houston, despite missing several key players due to injury, showed that they were still a tough team by taking three points away from Minnesota United. Steve Clark’s 5 saves, and Sebastian Kowalczycks’ first goal in his career were crucial.
Previous ranking: 11
D.C. has continued to show that its numbers indicate an offensive potential for a large number of goals. Christian Benteke, who scored his sixth season goal in the first five minutes of play and assisted the host’s second half goal, seemed to have changed the fate on Saturday. Orlando City came back twice, with Duncan McGuire scoring in stoppage time to give them all three points.
Previous ranking: 16
Charlotte’s home 3-2 win was the latest blow to Toronto after its early season start. Sean Johnson has been the victim of three Charlotte goals this season. This is a full third of Charlotte’s eight goals this season.
Previous ranking: 13
Houston’s stinging home defeat to Dynamo in the 70th minute overshadowed Franco Frangapane’s equalizer at the end of the game.
Previous ranking: 14
Peter Vermes’ side took the lead over Inter Miami in front of 72,610 fans at home at Arrowhead, but fumbled the advantage against a Miami side eager to show their elite talent as Messi & Co. nabbed their first MLS win in a month.
Previous ranking: 18
Orlando is yet to live up to their expectations this season, as they have underperformed in their offensive numbers. Saturday’s game against D.C. was only three goals — less than half the seven that were scored during their entire season. However, Duncan McGuire’s dramatic stoppage-time goal may provide them with some extra wind.
Previous ranking: 15
Seattle continued their mediocre start in ’24 with their third tie of the year. Both sides had two shots at FC Dallas and both came out with no goals.
Previous ranking: 17
The 3-0 victory over San Jose, a team that is among the lowest in the league’s standings, wasn’t their toughest challenge, but the win gives them more confidence in an attack they are showing increasing promise.
Previous ranking: 23
The ascendant debutants of last year had an uneven year (five draws), but they managed to win their second game with a 1-0 victory over a struggling Austin FC.
Previous ranking: 20
Josef Martinez scored the winning goal for last year’s Supporters Shield winner at home. It was his 107th MLS goal (ninth most in Major League Soccer history).
Previous ranking: 26
NYCFC earned its second victory of the year at home, against the Revs. After two draws that were hard-fought in consecutive weeks, NYCFC finally got the win they desperately needed. The two goals scored on Saturday are two out of the seven they have managed this season (just slightly below their expected 9.3).
Previous ranking: 22
Evander’s performance was outstanding as Portland battled LA for a 2-2 tie despite being down to 10 men most of the game.
Previous ranking: 19
John Herdman and the wooden spoon-winning team of last year started this season strong, but they have slowed down since then. They suffered another loss in this past week. Three goals in Charlotte accounted for nearly half the season’s total and almost all of Sean Johnson’s seven scored. (All of these came in his last two matches as he recovers from an injury.
Previous ranking: 24
Nashville, which suffered a crushing loss in week 8 to Philly, had the weekend off and will face Miami.
Previous ranking: 21
Chicago was able to earn a draw in the away game despite having played a New York Red Bulls side of 10 for the majority of the match. The Red Bulls were able to win the game despite holding 77% possession during the second 45 minutes.
Previous ranking: 25
Dallas has not recovered from injuries that have hampered their season. Seattle held Dallas to a draw with just two shots. It was the second time in two weeks that they had gotten a draw.
Previous ranking: 28
Austin lost a second time in the 1-0 defeat against St. Louis. The team fired only two shots with none on target.
Previous ranking: 29
San Jose lost its seventh game of the season to Colorado, who scored three goals on San Jose. This brings their total goals against this year up to 20.
Previous ranking: 27
After a 1-0 win last weekend against NYCFC, the Revolution suffered a 2-0 loss this week. The Revs have scored the fewest goals this season and had very little opportunity to score in this game.
