By the time play on three-handed began, Song was no longer in the chip lead. He had doubled his opponents’ chips a few times during the final table. This included a huge pot against Kinney, in which Song had won a massive pot. Kinney was in a commanding lead when three-handed play started. Egbert and Sandretto were far behind. Egbert’s top pair was outkicked and he was eliminated in the third place with $140,000, his career-high score.
The players discussed a chop deal during a 15 minute break before the start of the heads-up play. After negotiations, given that both players had almost identical stacks, the agreed to a near equal chop. “I definitely will mix in some more events, I will mix in some more non-hold’em events this year to try to get a bracelet now that I got a WPT championship to my name,” Sandretto said about his plans to play more events now that he has a bigger bankroll.

Sandretto’s ascent to WPT champion is an unlikely one. He played online before Black Friday, but struggled with making money. After a few years of grinding, he decided to give up his poker dreams and become a mortgage loan officer. He gave poker another shot a few more years later and it worked this time.
