The AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ Thailand 2024 will witness the continent’s premier 16 teams vying for supremacy on the court, starting this Wednesday. The tournament will take place from the 17th through the 28th of April in Bangkok, and the four best teams in each division will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan in 2024.
After an initial round of qualifying in October that involved 30 teams, fifteen have qualified to compete with the hosts, Thailand. These teams were divided into four groups at the official draw held in December.
This tournament includes a number of notable teams, including the defending champions Japan as well as the Islamic Republic of Iran. The latter has won this event twelve times and reached the finals eight times. Thailand and Uzbekistan, who have both participated in each edition to date of the competition, are also among the powerhouses.
Vietnam and Myanmar are set to meet for the very first time at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium. It will be their first ever encounter. Vietnam makes its seventh appearance, with its best result of 2016 as its previous finish. Myanmar is returning for the second time since 2018.
In the opening game of Group A, Thailand will host for the third consecutive time, and is looking to better their best finish as runner-up. China PR will be making their 13th appearance in the tournament, and is aiming to better or match its best performance from 2008 or 2010.
Uzbekistan will face Australia in Bangkok. Uzbekistan, which has finished second on four occasions, is looking to claim its first ever title. Australia will be making their eighth appearance and looking to better their previous best of 4th place.
Saudi Arabia will play Iraq in group B. Saudi Arabia, in its third outing, is hoping to get past the initial stage of the competition for the very first time. Iraq has participated 13 times, and their best performance was fourth place in 2018.
On the following day Groups C and D begin, which will feature matches such as Tajikistan versus Korea Republic and Japan versus Kyrgyz Republic. Japan is aiming for its fifth title. Iran has consistently finished in the top 3, and they begin their bid for a new title with Afghanistan, despite always finishing amongst the first three.
Both teams have shown impressive performances during the previous rounds.
Uzbekistan will automatically qualify as hosts for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. If Uzbekistan reaches the semi-finals a playoff is held to determine the team that finishes fifth. Teams can then try again to qualify for this World Cup scheduled for Central Asia between September 14, 2024 and October 6, 2020.
