This Week’s Preview
D.C. Defenders (1-1) @ Arlington Renegades (0-2)
Time: 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, 14 April
Renegades’ QB can be contained by the Defenders CB pair Luis Perez?
Gareon Conley The following are some examples of how to get started: DeAndre Baker Former first-round draft picks, they are looking to restart their career with the Defenders. The Defenders are off to an excellent start. They have allowed just three receptions on 10 targets for a total of 17 yards. Birmingham’s elite pair of Mark Gilbert The following are some examples of how to get started: Lorenzo Burns Baker and Conley may have more production of the ball, but they are also better at restricting yardage.
Arlington’s first victory of the year has not been secured by one of the most effective passing attacks in the league. Quarterback Luis Perez The team record doesn’t stop him from being a powerful quarterback. In fact, his PFF score is the second best amongst all quarterbacks at 79.2. Since last year’s championship, he earned an overall PFF grade of 65.0 or higher in six out of seven games.
Memphis Showboats (1-1) @ Birmingham Stallions (2-0)
Time: 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, 14 April
UFL best take on Showboats’ reeling squad
Birmingham, under Skip Holtz’s leadership, has emerged as the UFL leader in close games. Stallions’ Week 2 victory over Michigan Panthers was boosted by a second consecutive defensive masterclass featuring 25 quarterback pressurizations, five force incompletions, and a fumble. Birmingham’s pass attack is so fearsome that it can win even if they go only 13-of-27 with 141 yards, an interception, and five forced incompletions.
After a collapse of epic magnitude in Week 2, the Showboats lost their first game of the year. It’s now time to bounce back and face a fearsome Stallions’ team. Memphis had a 16-0 advantage over San Antonio Brahmas at the end of the third quarter, and it was 19-8 less than a minutes later. The Showboats did manage to intercept the quarterback in the fourth quarter. Chase GarbersIn the second half, on 29 throws to a primary player coverage, defense gave up 23 receptions for 275 yards and three scores, as well as 14 first downs. It is not an ideal recipe for victory.
Houston Roughnecks (0-2) @ Michigan Panthers (1-1)
Time: 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, 14 April
Panthers QB EJ Perkins Houston will be looking to counter the pass rush of Houston
The Roughnecks are winless largely because of inconsistent quarterback play — not poor defensive showings. Houston boasts two of UFL’s 10 best-graded interior defenders and edge defenders, who have accumulated the most sacks combined with quarterback hits (22), of any UFL squad.
Meanwhile, Panthers quarterback EJ Perkins aims to improve his performance against pressure. The lowest PFF-pressured grade in the NFL was earned by him in Week 1 when he went 1-of-5 and had an interception. He improved his performance in Week 2 to earn a pressured score of 62.2.
St. Louis Battlehawks (1-1) @ San Antonio Brahmas (2-0)
Time: 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 14, 2019
Early-season QB Battles to be fought
Battlehawks A.J. McCarron The Brahmas Chase Garbers Both have received 70.0-plus grades on the PFF and thrown for at least four touchdowns. They also threw 400 yards or more. St. Louis, a Jake Bates San Antonio is only 64 yards away from a 2-0 score if they can make a field goal.
It may be a case of which quarterback’s receiving group can support him the most. Battlehawks receivers have dropped a league-high eight passes — four more than the next-closest team — but continue to produce. Brahmas wide receivers top the league for yards, yards gained after a catch and touchdowns.
