The Philadelphia Phillies now have a brand new uniform.
Unveiled this morning by the club, the Phillies’ new Nike MLB City Connect uniform — the first of Nine players we will see in the NBA by 2024 — is a bold step outside the norms and traditions of what we’ve come to expect from a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.
We’ve gone with a blue gradient and yellow trim instead of the traditional red, white, royal blue. Instead of an Wordmark “Phillies”, scripted You have “PHILLY”, a jagged mark, across your chest. It’s not The curly “P’ on the capThe Liberty Bell is replaced by the skyline of the city.

In a press release, Phillies Vice-President of Business Relations Howard Smith said that the City Connect Series was one of Major League Baseball’s and Nike’s most successful initiatives to reach a wider audience. “We are excited and honoured to be the first team this season to officially unveil our City Connect uniform, which features a new modern design that represents being ‘unapologetically Philly’ and celebrates our city’s rich history.”
On Friday, April 12th, the Phillies will unveil their new uniforms on the field. The uniform will be worn for all Friday “Lights up // Friday Nights At the Bank” games until 2024 (and beyond). This new merch can be purchased in person only at Citizens Bank Park’s team store through December 12th. But if you cannot make it to Citizens Bank Park, then the e-store is still available. We’ll start with the caps, and work our way down.
The base of the ballcap is entirely midnight blue — crown, button, and visor. It features the iconic city logo on the top of the cap. Liberty BellIt has also been shown on other television channels. Phillies logos It has been around since 1992. This version is light blue and white with a trim. In a deeper blue, a skyline of Philadelphia is shown within the bell. A yellow star is placed on either side of it, as a reference to the stars which are dotted within the letter “i”. Phillies jerseys usually have a wordmark.. On the left, you will see New Era’s logo in yellow.
This cap is designed from undervisor to interior sweatband. The Liberty Bell’s etchings inspired the filigree on both. This team claims that placing the design element at these locations reinforces “that revolutions take place underground.”
The jersey is blue and yellow — a nod to the colours of the City of Philadelphia flag. It starts off with a lighter blue at the shoulders before transitioning to a dark blue at the waist — “from light to dark” because “Philly has always been a place unafraid to revolutionize, start anew, and work hard to make change.”
Across your chest is written in white the abbreviated nickname of the city “PHILLY.” Text similar to those in historical documents found throughout the city. In the middle of each letter is a small, delicate white pattern that mimics a crack in the Liberty Bell. This same pattern and style is carried over to the numbers of players on the back.
The sleeve has a roundel blue patch with a yellow border. The words “PHILADELPHIA”, arced above and below, in white are embroidered inside this patch. In the center, the lettering “LOVE”, in the same font as on the front of the patch is completed by the Liberty Bell instead of “O”. Although the club didn’t mention it, “LOVE”, which appears similar to Philadelphia’s LOVE installation art piece is presented in a similar way. The subtle stitching on a baseball in the background represents (here’s what we say) “how deeply Phillies is stitched into Philly DNA.” It could also represent baseball.
Pants are darker, midnight blue with one yellow side stripe. The lighter shade of blue at the waist breaks up the single blue color between the pants and jersey.
SportsLogos.Net found out in a conversation with Howard Smith (Phillies’ Vice President of Business Affairs) that the Phillies City Connect was first conceived in 2020 following John Middleton’s return from an Owner’s Meeting in which Nike participated.
It was exciting when Middleton shared his idea. Smith recalls. “We were confident that we would get it done the right manner. This has to come from the top. This decision could not be made in the clubhouse, or based on a simple merchandise consideration. The decision had to be driven by the organization. The process was very interesting to those not involved with the merchandise and uniforms.”
Nike and the Phillies embarked upon a process that lasted for an entire year. Each step of the process was carefully planned with many meetings, brainstorming sessions and feedback loops to ensure that the end product resonated deeply with Philadelphia.
“I worked with Nike for many years, and I was familiar with the storyline. Everything was planned over an 18 month period. They are very methodical. The structure was thoughtful. It was very structured and thoughtful. We would have an hour-long call with an aim, homework would follow.
The Phillies wanted to try something new from the very beginning. City Connect was a program that allowed clubs to break out of their comfort zone and experiment with colours and design ideas they might not normally have chosen.
“Middleton made it very clear to us that his objective was to encourage baseball to try to attract younger players, and that’s what we did. The goal wasn’t to create just another red-white-and blue uniform. This wasn’t about selling products. “It was more about making an impact on the field, and attracting that younger audience.”
The players were caught off-guard by this change of visual direction. It took them a moment to fully comprehend what they had seen.
From our players’ perspective, they felt pleasantly surprised. They were speechless when they saw it for the very first time. We’re a tradition-based organization. The fact that they were speechless freaked out me because I figured it meant the didn’t approve of it. The opposite was true. The were stunned. I asked, ‘What took you so long to say something?’ And the answer was, ‘I didn’t expect this!’, ‘So, does that mean you like it?’, ‘Yeah, it does!'”

Now in their fourth season, the Phillies is now Major League Baseball’s 20th team to debut a City Connect uniform. The The program will be implemented in 2021 Celebrate the “deeply rooted culture, history and spirit” of each city which continues to unite the clubs.
