The Rapid City Rush, a team in the ECHL, wore special edition jerseys this weekend to honor the heroes of D-Day who came from South Dakota and other states.
The Rush — the ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames — donned the jerseys on Saturday, March 30, when they hosted the Allen Americans on their annual Military Appreciation Night. The jerseys were designed by local artist Aaron Pearcy to honor the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and also celebrate the proud history and military service of South Dakota and the United States.
The jersey has a gray base with graphics that depict Allied soldiers storming D-Day beaches and fighter planes flying overhead. Over the top is the Rush’s primary R Logo. The names and numbers are set in a stencil font on the sleeves and back.
Pearcy said the jersey’s creation was a “fun” challenge.
“It was a lot fun to be able to combine honoring the military with shining light on the moment and still be able to wear it on a jersey,” he said. Rush’s official website.
“It wasn’t enough for me just to throw a photo on there and call that good,” he said. “I wanted it to be colder and fit in with the cold hockey theme. I also wanted it to have an icy feel.”
The patch of Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, with the words “I SUPPORT CAMPAGNAT VETS” appears on the back, below the numbers. The organization will be able to receive the funds raised after the game when the jerseys go up for auction.
