1999 was the year. We were Livin’ La Vida Loca, Jar Jar Binks was on the big screen in Star Wars Episode 1 for the first time and batteries and canned foods were flying off the shelves. We were preparing for the global meltdown of Y2K. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans made their debut on the South Carolina coast.
A quarter century later, the Class-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs unveiled a commemorative logo to mark the occasion of their 25th season—which, as Minor League Baseball’s Benjamin Hill Points outDue to the lost season in 2020, their 25th anniversary is also the same year.
The silver-splashed, Brandiose-designed logo features the team’s iconic pelican-head, a three dimensional number 25, four stars for the four championships and a diamond that represents both a baseball pitch and a jewel. The Pelicans have won Carolina League titles on two separate occasions. Their first two seasons were in 1999 and 2000, and then again in 2015.
Before moving to Myrtle Beach, the franchise played as a Single-A version of the Durham Bulls between 1980 and 1997. Then, in 1998, after Durham was awarded a Triple A franchise, they played a season as the Danville 97s. The 25th season of the Myrtle Beach Bulls begins on April 5 at home.
